Have you been wondering about coloured gemstone mining? We’re aiming at keeping you better informed by sharing articles from different reliable sources. Here below are brief passages of a very interesting article found in National Geographic Society and written by Vincent Pardieu and Laurent E. Cartier.

Conservation Gemstones: Beyond Fair Trade?
Posted by Saleem Ali of University of Delaware (USA) and University of Queensland (Australia) on January 12, 2012

In September 2009 Vincent Pardieu was on his way to visit and study a new ruby deposit in the Niassa bush of Mozambique. He and his team were detained for three long and tough days by park rangers who were controlling access to the illegal ruby mining site threatening the Niassa National Reserve, one of the largest and most remote parts of Africa dedicated to conservation. In May 2008, Laurent Cartier visited sapphire mines within Ankarana National Park in northern Madagascar.

Although illegal, miners are still operating within the boundaries of the Ankarana Park over a decade since the discovery of this deposit. These encounters led the authors to explore how conservation and the gemstone trade could find opportunities to benefit from each other. Does gemstone mining have to be in competition with environmental conservation? We think not. But achieving this requires that the realities of gemstone mining and the trade be fully taken into account.

In connection with this article we are working on a project for 2018. We believe in creating a fund, which will invest directly in artisanal mines or in accompaniment to certain minors of artisanal sites. We already have the contacts ensuring that the money will be entirely distributed to the craftsmen rather to intermediaries.

We are currently preparing a survey on the coloured gemstone market. With our more than 1,000 customers throughout Canada this could provide us a mine of information from which we could all benefit. I would collect the answers and share them with you, as well as with the International Color Gemstones Association for them to publish.
